Improper storage causes rapid degradation of cannabinoids and essential terpenes, turning a flavorful, relaxing flower into a dry, harsh, and ineffective product.
The four primary enemies of cannabis are light, temperature, oxygen, and moisture. Ultraviolet (UV) light is the single largest driver of cannabinoid breakdown. When UV light hits the flower, it converts active THC into CBN, causing the flower to lose its psychoactive punch and make you incredibly drowsy. To prevent this, always store your flower in dark, amber-tinted, or opaque glass jars rather than clear containers.
Relative humidity (RH) must be kept in a tight sweet spot: between 59% and 63%. If the environment is too dry, the fragile trichome heads will become brittle and break off, drying out the terpenes and ruining the aroma. If the environment is too wet (above 65% RH), you create a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Finally, control your temperature. Keep your jars in a cool, dark cabinet or drawer below 70°F. High heat causes terpenes to evaporate and speeds up decarboxylation. Conversely, never store your cannabis in a home refrigerator or freezer. The constant temperature fluctuations draw out internal moisture, and the extreme cold makes the trichome glands highly brittle, causing them to break off like tiny icicles.
